Transcription Services: Basic Information

Transcription services have been around for years. They started with the introduction of basic transcription of office meetings but have extended all the way to transcribing medical records, conferences and other events and documentations. The following lines will give you some information regarding this field.

Transcription services became popular in the 1970s when there was an explosion in the corporate world and hospitals and doctors also started feeling the need for a transcription service. That was the time when manufacturers realized the potential of this trade and started churning out one transcriber after another with a multitude of features and specifications. The field has seen immense growth ever since and is now considered a complete profession.

Most popular are the medical transcription services. These have received the maximum popularity given the explosion in the number of hospitals and more so because of the advancements in medical science. There were only 30 to 40 generic medicines half a century ago that were used all over the world. There were very few complex compounds, mixtures and tablets as medical and pharmaceutical sciences were still in evolutionary stages. Things have changed ever since due to the introduction of a diverse range of medicines and surgical procedures.

Now medical transcribers have a significant amount of work to do. They listen to audio recordings of doctors where they prescribe a certain medicine, elaborate on a medical or surgical procedure or give general advice. They convert that conversation and discussion into a written text format. They also convert into text the medical prescriptions and details of surgical procedures written by the doctors. While physicians the world over are known for their almost illegible writing, these people have the experience to convert them into neat and clean text format by using word processors.

Another field is that of legal transcription services. Lawyers, like doctors, also deal with swathes of written words. Their profession is more dependant on words than that of doctors as the whole court proceedings are done in verbal format and through court documents. They transcribe not just the testimonies of lawyers and witnesses but also court decisions and all the records that are presented in these courts. They convert these documents and evidences and testimonies into word format and present them in a very organized format.

Most audio transcription services do not charge any exorbitant rates. It all depends on the nature of the work and the type of documentation and transcription requested by the clients. Lengthy transcriptions that span months of court proceedings and a whole stack of medical audio commentaries and prescriptions will take time and thus will require more spending than a simple transcription job comprising of a few medical commentaries or court documents.
