The Olympus dictaphone is not the name of any single device that can be used to record voice. It is actually the generic name of Olympus that includes a number of dictation devices that offer a diverse range of recording facilities. The basic function of these devices is to record voice in a number of formats. This voice data can later be transferred to a computer where it can be saved, burned into a CD or uploaded to websites.
The Olympus dictaphone has certain basic features that are present in every model irrespective of its designs or features. The first is the microphone component that is used to record voice. In most models, this feature is integrated into the device and there is no external microphone. In some models however there is an option to add an external microphone for extra crisp voice quality. Olympus digital dictaphones that have been manufactured in recent years have altogether eliminated this system as they have incorporated stronger microphones built into the system.
The Olympus digital dictaphone has a simple speaker interface. This speaker interface offer adequate volume of sound. You can easily change the volume by using the rotational knob present on the dictaphone. There is of course an audio jack available in the device where you can insert ear sets to listen to the recording. This also eliminates any chances of anyone else listening to the recording as the external speakers automatically gets blocked as soon as you insert the head set into the device.
The Dictaphone Olympus DS has a simple display and control panel. All models come with a central play/pause button and stop and delete buttons. You will also find buttons to reset the panel display and adjust the settings. There is a small digital display screen that offers information on the folder on which the data is being recorded, the format of the data, time elapsed and time remaining along with battery power indicators and other features. Most models offer from 50 to 100 hours of digital voice recording.
All offer USB connections to PC with four folders for file management arranged in alphabetical format of A, B, C and D. Voice activation is available along with slow/fast playback options. Alarms are also available along with timer recording and index setting. Each folder can host up to 100 recording files of different formats and sizes. Internal memory differs from model to model but is generally in the range of 128 MB. It offers voice recording in XHQ/HQ/SP and LP formats. You will simply have to press the record button and the device will start recording. Press stop, insert the head set and listen to what you have recorded or transfer it to computer with the USB connection. It will make your recording life easier.
