A comparison between digital dictation and analog dictation compares and contrasts the two ways in which sound is recorded. Sound waves can be recorded by employing digital or analogue techniques. A sound consists of continuous variations in air pressure. In analog recording, a property of a physical recording medium is made to vary in accordance with the variations in the air pressure. The variations in the air pressure are first converted into electrical signals which are then used for analogous variations in the recording medium. In digital recording, a property or physical characteristic of the original sound is converted into a sequence of numbers. The questions that is always asked is whether analog dictation is superior to digital dictation or is it the other way round. To answer this question, let’s take a look at the advantage of both these types of dictation.
Analog systems have some advantages of their own. The first advantage of analog dictation is the absence of aliasing distortion. Digital dictation equipment requires filters for bandlimiting while audio systems don’t need these filters. The main purpose of the filters is to prevent the distortions in a digital recorder. Another advantage of analog recorder is that there is no quantization of noise. The original sound can be preserved to a maximum accuracy of the natural noise floor and the signal level of the media and the playback equipment. However, in digital dictation machines, the noise added to the original sound due to quantization makes it more audibly disturbing than the noise floor in analog systems.
On the other hand, a digital machine has its own advantages. The first advantage is the organization which you can do with digital dictation. You can arrange your dictations in files and folders while you can also manage the workflow through different tools. The second and most major advantage of a digital dictation machine is the quality of the sound. Although this point is countered by some people, the fact of the matter is that digital systems produce clear and precise recording along with easy playback for listening and transcription. In digital systems, you have more memory for recording as no tapes are involved and you can record for hours. Another key point of digital systems is their efficiency. You can access any point in a file within a matter of a few seconds. The memory is solid without any movable parts so you don’t have to worry about losing your data. Digitals systems are easy to carry since they are lightweight and compact and can fit in the palm of your hand easily. Keeping the aforementioned advantages in mind, it will be safe to say that digital dictation is much better than analog dictation if you use it properly.
